The announcement by Gordon Brown in his Budget of an extra £12 million for management and leadership skills in the arts has been widely welcomed by employers in the creative and cultural industries.

Tom Bewick, Chief Executive of Creative and Cultural Skills, said:

"The arts and creative industries account for 8 per cent of our national income. Parts of the sector lead the world in terms of innovation and creativity. Sixty per cent of visitors to the UK say it is our arts and cultural heritage that attracts them here. But this is not a time for complacency. To remain internationally competitive we need to be shaping the industries of the future."

"Our skills assessment of the industries has shown that management skills is an area currently under-developed. Most creative businesses and arts organisations tend to be small, under-capitalised and under-managed. They go from feast to famine and get by sometimes with improvisational entrepreneurship."

"Our employers, therefore, welcome this additional investment and look forward to working with George Cox who has been asked by the Chacellor to work with Creative and Cultural Skills in his review of how best to support our vitally important and growing sector."
