Higher Education gets Creative & Cultural - 28/02/05The latest published survey from the Higher Education Funding Council for England Higher Education - Business and Community Interaction Survey 2002-03 has ranked Creative & Cultural Skills at the top of its league table for Proportion of HEIs (Higher Edcuation Institutions) engaging with Sector Skills Councils as part of Institutional Strategy. This report analyses the results of the 2004 higher education-business and community interaction survey for UK higher education institutions. The results indicate that there has been a step-change in the way UK universities and HE colleges transfer knowledge in engaging with business, the public sector and the wider community, with significant increases in consultancy income and expenditure by companies on research. Higher Education Institutions were asked for the first time to state which Sector Skills Councils they strategically engage with (see below). Data returned show the Creative & Cultural Sector Skills Council (in development) was the most common of these, identified by nearly 40 per cent of HEIs. As the Sector Skills Councils continue to develop their work with HEIs and employers, these engagements will undoubtedly become more important for more HEIs.
This is great recognition for Creative & Cultural Skills at a time when the organisation is still in development and in the latter stages of agreeing its strategic plans, operational targets and Licence with Government for boosting skills and business performance in the sector. Tom Bewick, Chief Executive of Creative and Cultural Skills, said: "During our Development Stage we invested heavily in forging good working relationships with higher education and I'm delighted to see it has paid off. We will continue to engage with colleges and higher education because our employers recognise that they are a major supplier of skills and talent to the sector. Our priority, once Licensed, will be to forge even stronger higher education and industry links so that our creative and cultural industries continue to prosper in what amounts to the second highest growth area for jobs in the UK's economy."
