The performing arts area is highly diverse and includes players ranging from large commercial companies to small groups wholly dependent on public or private financial support. The majority of theatre venues are owned either by local authorities or by non-profit making organisations. However, most are commercially run and are self-financing.
Literature includes a mixture of professional and aspiring freelance screenwriters, novelists, poets and playwrights and, in terms of participatory activity, is one of the most popular creative pursuits through individual reading, book groups and creative writing groups.
The visual arts industry covers 'fine art', i.e. painting and drawing. It also includes photography, film, video and new media.
